Robbinsville: A beeping metal detector inside a UPS package caused a bomb scare that shut down Trenton-Robbinsville Airport yesterday morning.

A driver making deliveries at one of the terminals noticed the sound and alerted his dispatcher, who called authorities, police said. Troopers from the state police bomb squad who examined the package found it was no threat, but rather, that it contained a device used to detect underground cables.

The scare began just before 9:30 a.m., when the driver reached the office of Aviation Charters Inc. at the airport, said business owner and operator Paul Weiss.

When the driver went back to his truck, he heard short, quickly repeating beeps, according to Weiss. Not wanting to move the package or deliver it, the driver called his superiors, who called police.

Bomb squad troopers X-rayed the package and decided what was inside was not dangerous, Bainbridge said. The package was being shipped from Connecticut to Pine Environmental Services in the township.
