Janmashtami the festival of Lord Krishna Birth

Krishna Janmashtami (Devanagari) is a Hindu festival the celebration of Lord Krishna birth. Lord Krishna is an avatar of the Hindu God "Vishnu".

This festival is also known as 
  • Krishnashtami 
  • Gokulashtami 
  • Srikrishna Jayanti
  • Ashtami Rohini
  • Sree Jayanthi
  • Saatam Aatham or sometimes merely as "Janmashtami"
Krishna Janmashtami is observed according to Gregorian calendar and the festival is always celebrated in mid August to mid septemebr. The date of celebration is on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shraavana in the Hindu calendar, when the Rohini Nakshatra is ascendant. For example : in 2009, the festival was celebrated on the 14th of August, while in 2010 this  festival will be celebrated on 2 September.
