New Delhi: Rajiv Chowk, the busiest Metro station with a daily footfall of 5 lakh commuters, was paralysed for an hour on Thursday afternoon as security personnel combed the premises after a bomb alert. The call, which later turned out to be a hoax, had hundreds on the tenterhooks.

Entry to the station was closed during the search, which began after the Metro Security Control Room was alerted by the Delhi Police at 2.51 pm.

“The station went through extensive anti-sabotage sweeps with officials of Quick Reaction Teams as well as Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads swinging into action. Following thorough checks within as well as outside the station, we found that it was a hoax call,” said a CISF spokesperson.

The police had received a call from a fire station phone extension, warning of a bomb threat to the station. The fire station had earlier received a call from a public phone booth, which the police are still trying to identify.
