Cairo: A goverment chartered Qantas flight heading to Egypt to evacuate more than 100 stranded Australians has been delayed by 13 hours by a mechanical fault.

The plane was stuck on the ground at Frankfurt airport because of a fault with its braking system.

More than 100 Australians are in hotels at Cairo airport waiting for the delayed charter flight while another 30 are unable to leave their hotel in the city centre because of clashes between anti government supporters and those loyal to president Hosni Mubarak.

The first charter flight to evacuate Australians from Egypt arrived in Frankfurt with 191 passengers on board last night.
