Hackensack: A small plane made an emergency landing on Interstate 80 in Hackensack, New Jersey Monday afternoon, state police have confirmed.

The plane, described as a single engine Cessna was headed toward Teterboro Airport but was forced to make an early landing on the stretch of highway due to a mechanical problem. The plane was being operated by a former commercial airlines pilot, James Mancini, 69, of Kinnelon, NJ.

Mancini landed just before 3 p.m. in the eastbound express lanes near Polify Road.

A flight instructor and flight safety officer were apparently on board at the time of the incident, officials said. The flight was part of a training exercise.

No injuries were immediately reported. It wasn't clear how many people were in the plane.
