USA: Two JetBlue airliners en route to Boston were struck by lightning late last night, forcing one to make an emergency landing after the smell of smoke was reported in the cockpit.

The Airbus A320 from Tampa to Boston with 82 people aboard was struck on approach and landed safely at 9:21 p.m. at Logan International Airport, where emergency vehicles were waiting on the runway, spokeswoman Lisa Langone said.

A second JetBlue flight, an Embraer 190 from Baltimore to Boston with 90 people aboard, also landed safely at 9:47 p.m. at Logan after it was struck by lightning, she said.

There were no reports of injuries.

Lightning strikes were reported in Boston and across the state yesterday evening from a storm that erupted due to a “combination of almost record-breaking warmth’’ ahead of a strong cold front.
