The island country of Maldives is known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. There are a large number of festivals in Maldives that are clear examples of its cultural tradition and heritage.

The Maldives festivals are extremely colorful and filled with fun, excitement and enjoyment. People come together to have a great time and enjoy with friends and relatives in these cultural festivals in Maldives.

Maldivians have great national pride. In all festival planning a feeling of family is sensed as women, men, and children share in the preparation of food, decoration, and entertainment programmes. Most celebrations will find a blending of tradition and modern entertainment. Folk dances and music using wooden instruments may be followed by modern jazz or pop music.

Ramadhan

Ramadhan is the ninth month in the Moslem calendar, a month during which moslems mark 30 days of fasting. The working hours are altered for the month, the government offices being opened from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM and the private sector also closing for the day at 3:00 in the afternoon.

The National Day

The National Day is celebrated on the 1st of Rabee-ul Awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar.

Independence Day

July 26th on Malé is the biggest national event in the Maldives festivals' calendar. It marks the Maldives Islands’ independence from the British in 1965.

World Food Day

World Food Day was created by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. In Malé there’s an official reception attended by the Maldivian President.A food fair can be that unites producers, suppliers and consumers to promote local produce and traditional food items.

Republic Day

On 11th November 1968 Maldives became a Republic of the second time. The day is celebrated every year with parades and marches.

Prophet's Birthday

As with all Muslims, Maldivians celebrate the Prophet's Birthday. The prophet's Birthday is 12th day of Rabee-ul-Awwal in the Islamic Calendar.

Eid Festival

The Maldives has been an Islamic country since 1153 and the Islamic festival of Eid has always been an important event for the people. Even in the days of the monarchy, special customs were followed in the Eid. It includes special drumbeats from 'Nabuskhan', a place where special events are announced with drums, and the official procession of the Sultan to the Eid prayer. This procession was accompanied by music and military displays. In the islands special games are played.

Fishermen's Day

Fishermen's Day is celebrated on December 10 to emphasise the importance of fishing to the Maldivian economy and the livelihood of Maldivians. Savour skipjack tuna, frigate mackerel and other local fish on what promises to be a delicious occasion.
