Mauritius Money
Currency
They use the Mauritian rupee. At this time (May 2010) Euro 1 = 42 Rupees, 1GBP = 50 Rupees and 1 US$ = 34 Rupees. Mauritian rupees do not circulate outside Mauritius so that you can only change money on the island. Euro/UKú or US$ travelers cheques and cash can be changed in the banks. (Please NOTE that the exchange rate for traveller's cheques is better than for cash).

There are 3 banks in the airport just after the baggage hall and there are 3 banks in Grand Bay and in other major towns on the island. Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are accepted in restaurants and hotels and also in many shops and supermarkets. In addition you can use credit cards to obtain cash in the banks or use them together with the secret (PIN) number to get money from cash dispensers. Please note that direct debit cards carrying either the Cirrus or Maestro labels are also accepted by most cash machines.

Money Exchange
Cash can be exchanged in banks, exhange bureaus and larger hotels. The rate at banks and exchange bureaus tends to be fairly similar, always check first. Banks are open from Monday to Thursday 0915-1515, Friday 0915-1530, Saturday 0915-1115 (some banks only).

ATM Availability
ATMs are widely available and generally reliable in Mauritius.  For more information check the Visa ATM locator, the MasterCard ATM locator or the American Express ATM locator for the addresses of ATMs around the world.

Credit Cards
Credit cards are accepted by most large restaurants, shops and hotels, always check in advance. Some establishments will charge commission of up to 3% for this service. Credit cards and debit cards should always be used with caution due to the potential for fraud and other criminal activity.
