Belize celebrates Baron Bliss Day on or about the 9th of March every year.
Baron Bliss Day commemorates the life of Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss, commonly known as Baron Bliss who was considered to be Belize’s greatest benefactor. Bliss willed his money, around USD$2 million dollars to a trust fund for the benefit of the people of Belize. During the holiday, the popular regatta or local boat races are held across the country. Cities and towns alike may hold traditional boat races and fishing tournaments as part of the holiday’s yearly tradition. The government may also hold ceremonial wreath laying in Baron Bliss Memorial Lighthouse and Park and other monuments across the country.
