Constitution Day commemorates the introduction of the new Japanese constitution on 3 May 1947 after the Second World War.
Although it is a very recent public holiday, and more observed by government organisations than individual Japanese people, its importance for the visitor is that this day is part of the series of public holidays in late April and early May called Golden Week. This is one of the three biggest holiday seasons in Japan (together with New Year and the summer O-Bon Festival) and a time when travel and accommodation services are under tremendous pressure. As Golden Week provides all the trauma of mass travel without any particularly spectacular festivals, it is probably best avoided. Advertisement: Tokyo Cheap
