Coronation Day in Thailand commemorates the coronation of King Bhumibol Adulyadej on May 5, 1950.
In local Thai language, the holiday is called Wan Chattra Mongkhon. English speakers usually refer to him as or “Rama IX”, although the terminology is never used in the country. Bhumibol Adulyadej is the ninth king of Thailand’s Chakri Dynasty. During the holiday, the people of Thailand organize various activities. In the same manner, the King also awards those who have made valuable contributions to Thai society. Since Bhumibol Adulyadej’s religion is Theravada Buddhism, various religious rites according to the custom of the religion is held from May 3 until the celebration of his coronation on May 5.
