Dia de La Raza Mexico
12-12 October

In Mexico, October 12th is a national holiday known as Día de la Raza or Day of the Race.

This date is honored in other countries as Columbus Day and under other names but the event it commemorates and the way in which it is observed have become quite controversial. The holiday celebrates the mixed race that emerged from the discovery of the Continent - of the heritage beyond the scope of its colonizers. Strangely enough, in Jalisco, it is also remembered as the day of the 'Virgen de Zapopán', a patron and powerful deity that once appeared on this day. On this day, parades and parties abound around down town, and many people appear on the streets because it is a local holiday. Heritage and spirituality mix together for an eventful day of celebration.
