A number of Britons were among dozens of people killed when a jet packed with tourists crashed at Phuket airport in Thailand, officials say.

There were 123 passengers and seven crew members on the plane when it ditched during an attempted landing in heavy rain and strong winds.
Thai officials said 88 bodies had so far been recovered from the wreckage and another 42 people taken to hospital.

Phuket's Deputy Governor said Brits were among the fatalities - along with Irish, Israeli and Australian nationals.A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office - who could not confirm the news - said: "We know there were definitely British nationals on board but we are still trying to urgently establish the details."
Representatives of the British Honorary Consul in Phuket are at the scene and an embassy team, led by the ambassador, is already on its way on a flight from Bangkok, she added.

Survivors described seeing other passengers on fire and said they had leapt from emergency exits to save themselves as the plane was set alight.

The One-Two-Go jet - owned by Orient Thai Airways - slid off the runway, its fuselage crumpled, and then burst into flames.

The airport has been temporarily closed.
