Moderate earthquake hits eastern Taiwan

Taipei: An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale took place in eastern Taiwan's Hualien at 1:55 p.m Monday, with no casualties or damage reported.

The Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center said the epicenter of the temblor was located 16.5 km northeast of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 15.9 km.

The highest intensity was recorded at 5.0 in nearby Taroko Gorge, the center said.

The quake was felt by residents in the county's Sioulin Township and in Nanao Township in neighboring Yilan County with an intensity of 4 and in Hualien City and Nantou County with an intensity of 3.

A total of nine quakes rocked the country from 2: 10 a.m. that day, of which three reached a magnitude of 3.0 or more.
