An earthquake occurred in Styria on Saturday, the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) in Vienna has said.

ZAMG experts announced Monday that the eruptions reached a magnitude of 2.5 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located outside the town of Murau, they added.

Meteorologists explained it was unlikely that the quake, which occurred around 2am, caused any damages to buildings. Local newspapers report that dozens of residents were woken up by the eruptions.

Austria experienced 50 earthquakes last year (2009: 30). The strongest quake of 2010 occurred near Schwaz, Tyrol, in October. It had a magnitude of 4.0, according to investigations by the ZAMG.
