Moderate earthquake hits west coast of Northern Sumatra

Indonesia: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred off the west coast of Northern Sumatera, Indonesia at 10.32pm Sunday.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department in a statement said the quake occurred 56km west of Nias, Indonesia and 505km southwest of Pulau Pangkor, Perak.

Earlier yesterday, a moderate earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale occurred at Molucca Passage 5.51pm, 201 km southeast of Manado, Indonesia and 996km southeast of Kunak, Sabah.

Both the quakes did not pose any tsunami threat, the statement said.
