New Zealand: Flights across New Zealand have been grounded after the Christchurch earthquake.

Auckland Airport spokesman Richard Llewellyn told NZPA the national air traffic control centre is in the South Island city and has to be checked to make sure it's okay.

He says planes were still landing a short time ago, but no planes are taking off. Meanwhile, Telecom told NZPA some of its phone networks had been badly damaged in the quake.

Some network sites have been badly damaged and are not working, and others are operating on battery back up power. To minimise the stress on the network and to conserve back-up power we ask people to only use their phones for emergency calls.
